WC to host All-Star Weekend

The top baseball talent from 40 two-year colleges will gather at Weatherford College’s Roger Williams Ballpark Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21-22, for the Texas/New Mexico JUCO All-Star Weekend.

Four conferences from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) will be represented. The coaches of each conference have selected the top players to face off in the All-Star Weekend.

This level of talent will draw in professional scouts and college recruiters to watch the action.

“Texas JUCO baseball is some of the best of what college baseball is all about, and we’re excited to host this event,” said Jeff Lightfoot, WC head baseball coach. “Professional scouts and college recruiters will come in from all over the country to watch these All-Stars compete.”

Athletes will arrive Thursday night to prepare for a Friday morning workout followed by the first game at 12:30 p.m., a home run derby at 3:30 p.m. and another game at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday’s action begins with a game at 11 a.m. and the final game at 3:30 p.m.

Five athletes will represent the Coyotes in the tournament: returning catcher, Philadelphia Phillies draft pick and University of Tennessee commit Landon Gray; conference Hitter of the Year Andrew Keefer; first team All-Conference outfielder Jake Michener; two-time national Pitcher of the Week and Seattle Mariners draft pick Jake Lyons; and sophomore pitchers Toby Davis and Zach Boyett.

“If you are a baseball fan, this is a must-see,” Lightfoot said.

Tickets are $10 a day or $15 for a tournament pass. Tickets will be available at the gate. For more information on WC athletics, go to www.wcathletics.com.
