WC Rodeo chasing National Team Berth

With three rodeos remaining, the Weatherford College men’s team is seeking to do something only accomplished once before in team history – earn a team berth to the College National Finals Rodeo June 11-17 in Casper, Wyoming.

The only other time that happened was in 2014 when the men also qualified their entire team. Overall, WC has qualified at least one competitor to the CNFR each of the past 13 seasons.

In the latest standings, the Coyotes are second among the men and seventh among the women. The top two teams and top three individuals in each event advance to nationals.

The WC men have 2,410 team points, trailing only Tarleton State University with 2,815. Close in third is Odessa College with 2,375.

Three rodeos remain, April 5-7 at Western Texas College in Snyder, April 12-14 at Howard College in Big Spring and the regular season wraps up at Tarleton State in Stephenville.

Two Coyotes are among the national leaders. Lane Cooper is fifth in team roping-header and Kirby Blankenship is sixth in team-roping-heeler. Each leads the Southwest Region with 615 points.

Also, if the season ended today, Jace Davis would qualify in team roping-heeler with 300 points for second place, Sadye Simpson is second in barrel racing with 340 points and Kelly Valdez is third in breakaway roping with 255 points.

Numerous others are also among the region’s leaders, looking for a late surge:

  • Leighton Berry – eighth in bareback, 300 points, third has 555 points; tied for 10th in tiedown roping with 190 points, third has 253.3 points.
  • Wyatt Hansen – sixth in tiedown roping, 213.3 points.
  • Garrett Jacobs – tied for 15th in tiedown roping, 115 points; tied for seventh in team roping-heeler, 145 points, third is 285.
  • Tucker Menz – tied for ninth in team roping-header, 130 points, third is 285.
  • Bristan Kennedy — sixth in barrel racing, 250 points, third is 330.
  • Brogan Macy – eighth in barrel racing, 210 points.
  • Marki Cleveland – 13th in barrel racing, 115 points.
  • Aspyn Dent – sixth in goat tying, 205 points, third is 315.
