WC Ropers win Region, Emmons named Coach of the Year

For the 14th consecutive year, the Weatherford College rodeo team is sending representatives to the College National Finals Rodeo in June.

WC’s Kirby Blankenship and Lane Cooper wrapped up the Southwest Region championship this weekend at the Tarleton State University Rodeo in Stephenville. They will compete at the CNFR in Casper, Wyoming, June 9-16.

Blankenship, a heeler from Lampasas, and Cooper, a Weatherford High School graduate and header, each had big leads in their respective regional standings before the weekend, and a fourth place finish in Stephenville finalized their titles. The duo is WC’s fourth regional roping championship team.

The WC men’s team finished the season fourth out of 17 teams and the women’s team was eighth.

Johnny Emmons, Weatherford’s rodeo coach, won the region’s Coach of the Year Award for the second time in four years.

Leighton Berry set a school record with 620 points over seven rodeos, but because he missed three weekends due to injury, he missed the CNFR by 160 points. He finished fifth in bareback riding.

Kelly Valdez was another near-miss for nationals, finishing just 20 points shy in breakaway roping.

In barrel racing, Sadye Simpson was fifth in the region, Bristan Kennedy finished sixth and Brogan Macy was ninth.

Tucker Menz earned seventh place in team roping-header. Garrett Jacobs was seventh in tie down roping and Wyatt Hansen was eighth. Aspyn Denton finished tenth in goat tying.
