WC rodeo sends eight to CNFR

Eight Weatherford College rodeo team members are advancing to the College National Finals Rodeo after their final competition of the season, the Tarleton State University Rodeo, held in Stephenville this past weekend.

Spring 2019 CNFR TeamThis is the 15th consecutive year for Coyote athletes to represent WC at the CNFR, and it’s the largest group of qualifiers yet.

Both the men and women’s rodeo teams finished third in the region after the final rodeo of the season.

Bristan Kennedy won the Southwest Region barrel racing title and her horse, Ci Ci, was named the region’s Women's Horse of the Year.

Kasen Brennise won the regional title in tiedown roping and teammate Chantz Webster finished third for the season.

Leighton Berry finished as the reserve champion in bareback riding after winning the TSU title and the Mike Brown Memorial Buckle. Berry also won a Polaris ATV in a drawing amongst competitors.

Team ropers Kade Smith and Blake Bentley won the title at the TSU Rodeo and finished as the reserve Southwest Region team roping champions, while defending champions Lane Cooper and Kirby Blankenship ranked among the top five and will compete at their second CNFR.

Tate Thomas narrowly missed the CNFR, finishing third in the all-around, fourth in tiedown and sixth in steer wrestling. Thomas's horse finished as the Men's Reserve Horse of the Year and carried Webster to his CNFR qualification.

Kelly Valdez, Laney Fowler, Faith Holyan and Kennedy had an outstanding year winning the barrel racing title at eight of the 10 rodeos finishing just 45 points shy of a women's team qualification.

The 2019 CNFR will take place June 9-15 in Casper, Wyoming.
