WC hosts regional softball tournament

Weatherford College will host the 2019 Region 5 North Softball Tournament Saturday through Monday, May 4-6, at Stuart Field.

The top six teams from the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) will compete in the double-elimination tournament. The winner will advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National Championship Tournament in St. George, Utah, May 22-25.

In addition to WC’s Coyotes, the regional tournament will feature No. 9 Temple College, last season’s national champion, as well as North Central Texas College, Vernon College, McLennan Community College and Grayson College.

On Saturday, Vernon and Grayson will open the tournament at noon with Game 1. Weatherford and McLennan play Game 2 at 2:30 p.m. The winner of Game 1 will face NCTC at 5 p.m. and the winner of Game 2 will play Temple at 7:30 p.m.

Four games are scheduled Saturday – noon, 2:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday’s slate includes a semifinal game at noon and the championship game at 2:30 p.m., with a 5 p.m. game if necessary.

Weatherford (31-19) is the fourth seed. The Coyotes finished the season winning three out of their last four games with a 19-13 NTJCAC record. Pitcher Casson Rasmussen (11-5) ranks third in the conference in ERA (2.89) with 33 walks and 65 strikeouts in 126 innings pitched. Stephanie Jiminez leads the team in batting average (.434), Eliza Eberhard is the hits leader at 51 and Kristin Kamnick has 12 home runs, seventh in the conference.

Tickets are $10 per day for general admission and $5 per day for WC students and those age 65 and up.
