Coyotes sweep Leopards to win the series
Home runs for WC lead to double-digit victories in both games
The No. 1 Weatherford College baseball team put up an impressive double-header at the Danny Scott Sports Complex on Saturday.
Facing Temple College, the Coyotes took game three of the series with a 10-2 victory and game four at 12-8.
Game three was a breeze for WC (6-2 in conference, 21-4 overall). With two in the second, one in the fourth and two in the sixth, the Coyotes doubled their 5-2 lead against the Leopards (4-4, 11-14) with a five-run seventh inning.
AJ Miera was on the mound pitching for four innings, only allowing two runs on three hits. Rodney Pena relieved Miera for the remaining three, collecting four strikeouts, zero hits and zero runs.
Six players for the Coyotes brought in a run; JC Davis, Blake Martinez and Manuel Salas had one a piece, Uriah Walters and Caden Mitchell each brought in two, and Trace Mazon had a three RBI game.
Davis, Martinez and Salas all had a stolen base, while Mazon, Walters and Mitchell each knocked out a homerun.
Game four started with an electric first-inning homer by Mazon to give WC the early lead.
The Leopards put up one of their own in the first to even the score, but the Coyotes kicked it into high gear.
Bringing home two in the second, and a combined eight in the fourth and fifth, WC had a 12-4 lead in six innings. Temple responded by bridging the gap, making the score 12-8 in the bottom of the sixth, but the Coyotes played lights out for the remaining three innings.
A strong double-play made by the defense and precision from the offense led to the victory for WC. The pitching team put up nine total strikeouts.
Salas led the Coyotes with three hits and four runs batted in, with Mazon for two and Clark Springs for two as well.
The Coyotes are back at Roger Williams Ballpark on Wednesday to start their series against Cisco College, with games starting at noon and 3 p.m.
