Coyotes extend win streak to five
Weatherford offense explodes in doubleheader sweep
The No. 4 nationally ranked Weatherford College Coyotes (30-7 overall, 13-5 in conference) dominated a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader on the road against Ranger College. Their 6-4 win and 10-2 win extends the Coyotes' winning streak to five games.
The Coyote offense got off to a strong start, scoring in the first three innings to build an early lead that they would maintain throughout the contest. The Coyotes plated one run in the first, one in the second, and three more in the third to take a 5-1 advantage.
Key offensive contributors for the Coyotes included Caden Mitchell, Trace Mazon and Manuel Salas who each went 2-for-2.
On the mound, sophomore right-hander Evan Brandt earned the victory, pitching 6.2 solid innings. Brandt allowed four runs on six hits while striking out three and walking three. Rodney Pena came on in relief to record the final out.
The Coyotes carried their offensive momentum into the second game, exploding for double-digit runs in a dynamic 10-2 victory to complete the doubleheader win. Weatherford's offense was potent throughout the game, scoring in five different innings.
The offensive charge was led by Mazon, who had a standout performance, going 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBIs. Salas continued his strong day, going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.
The Coyotes tallied a total of 10 hits in the contest, bringing their season total to 315 runs scored and a team batting average of .330.
Sophomore right-hander Cooper Strawn earned the win on the mound, pitching five strong innings. Strawn allowed just one earned run on four hits, while striking out seven and walking two. Noah Bentley pitched the final four innings in relief, holding the Rangers scoreless and allowing only one hit while striking out three.
The Coyotes, boasting an impressive .811 winning percentage and 43 home runs on the season, will conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader against Ranger College at Roger Williams Ballpark in Weatherford this Sunday, April 6, beginning at noon.
