Four game series sweep marks major milestone for WC baseball head coach
April 14, 2025
No. 3 Weatherford College baseball showed up big time on Saturday, winning both games against Hill College at Roger Williams Ballpark. Bringing the heat in a 5-0 shutout in game one and a dominant 11-3 win in game two, WC swept the Rebels in their four-game series.
This weekend's victories marked 900 career wins for Head Baseball Coach Jeff Lightfoot, who has been leading the Coyotes to victory for the past 22 years. The three-time conference Coach of the Year Award winner is now 900-559-1 in his 27 years as a college head coach.
Starting out four innings with goose eggs, the Coyotes finally hit the ground running on a two RBI single from JC Davis, who then stole second on a wild pitch to put WC on the board in Saturday's first game. Following Davis, Trey Butler hit a sacrifice fly out to right to bring another runner home.
Garrett Schroeder cashed in an RBI single in the sixth.
Trent Collier won the game for the Coyotes, pitching all seven innings. He struck out eight batters, walking three, and allowed no runs on six hits.
The late game started out with an early RBI single for the Coyotes from the bat of Cayden Byrd in the bottom of the second. A couple of innings later, the Rebels took the lead 2-1, but the home team responded quickly on an RBI single from Manuel Salas to tie it back up.
Caden Mitchell hit an RBI single to bring the Coyotes ahead, though Hill was able to bridge the gap in the sixth.
Igniting the Weatherford dugout, and starting the victory train, catcher Clark Springs hit a sacrifice fly to put WC back on top. Uriah Walters hit for a two RBI single but made it a double on an error from the Rebels. Mitchell singled in the bottom of the eighth to bring one home.
The straw that broke the camel's back came from Byrd, who not only hit an RBI double, but stole third and home.
Five Coyote pitchers threw for a combined eight strikeouts, four walks and allowed three runs on seven hits. AJ Miera started and went for four innings with five hits, no runs, one walk and four strikeouts. Dylan Buechele earned the win with a perfect inning and a third.
Weatherford has won nine in a row and remains in first place in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference.
WC (36-7 overall, 19-5 conference) will be at home at Roger Williams Ballpark on Wednesday to take on No. 20 McLennan Community College, with the doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
