WC looking for three-peat conference championship
May 2, 2025
The Weatherford College baseball team is one win away from a third straight conference championship after two wins Thursday at Vernon College.
The No. 5 Coyotes (43-10 overall, 23-7 conference) can clinch a share of the conference title with one win Saturday over Vernon at Roger Williams Ballpark. Two wins would ensure an outright title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming regional postseason.
On Thursday, both games ended early due to the run rule. WC took game one 11-0, thanks to a 10-run outburst in the second and third innings. Three Coyotes hit home runs: Mason Ashlock, Cayden Byrd and Uriah Walters. Byrd finished the game 3-for-3.
Evan Brandt gave up four hits over the game's five innings, allowing no runs and one walk while striking out one.
Game two was a 13-5 win. Three more homers flew off the bats of Manuel Salas, Jake Overstreet and Ashlock. Overstreet hit a grand slam to left field in the eighth inning.
Cooper Strawn earned the win, giving up only three hits, one earned run and two walks while striking out six over four and a third. Noah Bentley was effective in relief, going hitless in two and two-thirds with no walks and four strikeouts.
Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon.
If the Coyotes finish in the top two in conference play, they will host a first-round postseason best of three series May 8-10 at Williams Ballpark. Visit wcathletics.com for the latest information.
