In a battle between last year's conference co-champions, Weatherford College and Grayson College split a baseball doubleheader in Denison on Thursday. Grayson won game one 9-8 and No. 23 Weatherford answered with a 20-12 in game two.
The Coyotes belted four home runs on the day and now rank fourth nationally with 55 homers in 21 games.
In game one, Grayson built a 9-4 lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. WC rallied with four runs of their own in the top of the seventh, capped by a three-run homer from Caden Mitchell. But the rally fell one run short.
Jackson Irons paced the Coyotes at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Weatherford erupted in the second game, scoring in all but one inning and producing a pair of four-run frames.
Ty Waid finished the game 5-for-7 with four RBI, while Jake Overstreet was 3-for-3 with three RBI, a home run, four runs scored and a walk. WC hitters drew 16 walks in the win.
Dylan Buechele provided the most effective relief outing for the Coyotes, allowing one hit and two runs with two walks and two strikeouts over two and a third innings.
WC has a 14-9 overall record and leads the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference with a 5-1 record. The Coyotes will host Grayson (11-8, 4-2) in a noon doubleheader on Saturday, March 14, at Roger Williams Ballpark.
