The No. 21 Weatherford College Coyotes settled for a split in their baseball doubleheader at Hill College on Saturday, bouncing back from an opening loss with a high-scoring win in the finale to secure three victories in the four-game season series.
Hill took advantage of a pair of big innings to win the opener 11-2, but Weatherford responded with a 13-9 victory in Game 2.
In the first game, Weatherford struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but Hill answered in the second and broke the game open with a five-run third. The Rebels added four more runs in the fourth inning to seize control.
Kyzer Harrington and Walt Jones each drove in a run for the Coyotes, while Joseph Sandusky scored and reached base three times. Weatherford committed two errors and could not recover from the early surge.
The Coyotes answered with an offensive outburst in the second game, scoring 13 runs on 12 hits to even the twin bill.
Weatherford plated five runs in the third inning and followed with three more in the fourth to erase an early deficit. After Hill closed the gap with a two-run rally in the eighth, the Coyotes shut the door in the ninth.
Ty Waid led the Coyotes at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Jake Overstreet homered and drove in three runs, while Spencer Butt added a three-run triple. Cayden Byrd homered and finished with two RBI, and Jackson Irons went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
AJ Miera earned the win after striking out seven and allowing four runs over five innings. Clint Beck recorded the final out to collect the save.
Hill's offense was paced by Thomas McHugh's three-run home run and a three-RBI effort from Dryden Fuoco, but the Rebels could not overcome the Coyotes' balanced attack.
The Coyotes moved their overall record to 23-11 with a conference mark of 13-3. Weatherford and Grayson are tied at the top of the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference.
Next, WC faces No. 12 McLennan in a crucial four-game series: Wednesday, April 1, in Waco and Friday, April 3, at Roger Williams Ballpark in Weatherford. Friday's doubleheader begins at noon.
