Buzzer-beater postseason victory for WC
Last-second shot advances Coyotes to regional semifinals
In the most dramatic way possible, the Weatherford College men's basketball team claimed victory against No. 18 Midland College on Wednesday. The Coyotes advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association Region V Tournament semifinals in Waco on a three-point buzzer beater from Antwan Wilson, making the final score 58-56.
This marks a win in 10 of the last 11 games, making WC's overall record 19-11.
At tip-off, the first shot for two came from the Coyotes. The game was a back-and-forth race from there on out.
Lead changes from Midland to WC were constant. Every point made by one team was followed by a game-equalizing shot from the other.
With a minute left until halftime, Midland had the two-point lead 24-22. A clutch shot from WC's Braylon Crosby tied it up at the end of the first half, making it 24 across the board.
Round two, new game.
Coming out of the locker room, WC regained the lead early, though the Chaps stepped up on defense. The battle for the win was fierce, switching the lead 17 times.
Weatherford College fought the Midland defense hard, guarding the ball with everything they had.
Handy Toussaint's three key blocked shots and 12 rebounds helped WC maintain its lead through the middle of the second half.
A clean three-pointer from Tyson Whybrew extended the lead for WC to 43-40.
At the last minute, Midland thought they secured the semifinals slot, regaining the lead 56-55, but they would be wrong. With 2.93 seconds left, the Coyotes put their trust in Antwan Wilson, who made a 30-foot no-doubter. The near half-court shot sent the final score to 58-56 in favor of the Coyotes.
Wilson not only scored the game-winning three-pointer for WC but was also the point leader for both teams with 17. Toussaint followed up his remarkable defense with 14 points, and Whybrew's last three-pointer made his total 10.
The Coyotes look forward to Friday's 1 p.m. matchup against No. 8 South Plains College at McLennan Community College in Waco.
