Texasns' second-half surge dims Coyotes hopes
After advancing with a thrilling buzzer-beater win on Wednesday, the Weatherford College Coyotes saw their season come to an end Friday with a 72-57 loss to South Plains College in the semifinals of the NJCAA Region V Men's Basketball Tournament in Waco.
The Texans (26-6), ranked No. 8 in the nation and champions of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference, utilized multiple alley-oops and effective defense in the win.
Weatherford had a 22-18 lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half. But a 12-2 South Plains run gave the Texans a 38-27 halftime lead.
The Coyotes cut the lead to eight in the second half, but then South Plains put its foot on the gas and finished off WC in the latter minutes of the game.
Sophomore guard Antwan Wilson led WC with 18 points, four assists and three rebounds. He played all 40 minutes of the game, the only player on either team to do so.
Handy Toussaint added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Isaac Taveras led all scorers with 21 points and 11 rebounds for South Plains.
WC ends the season 19-12 overall, their fourth straight winning season. The Coyotes finished 11-3 in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference, in second place for the second straight year.
