In the first tournament of the new year, the Weatherford College men's golf team tied for second place out of 15 teams at the Waco River Classic played Sept. 16-17 at Bear Ridge Golf Club.
"This was a big one with the best teams in our conference," said Dave Rennhack, WC head golf coach. "Our players battled a tough course and had a great attitude throughout the event. We out-scored some great teams, including New Mexico JC, last year's national champion. It's a great start."
WC finished 11-over-par and got better throughout the three rounds, shooting 8-over in the first round, 2-over in the second and 1-over in the third.
Midland won the tournament at 4-under. WC tied with Western Texas for second place. New Mexico was fourth at 16-over. Host McLennan finished fifth at 17-over.
Weatherford's top individual was Giovanni Vezza, who placed ninth out of 99 golfers at 1 under. Dawson Langan was 12th at 1 over.
The WC women's golf A-team finished sixth out of 10 teams. WC's Corrina Haros was 18th out of 63 golfers.
The Weatherford men will next compete at the Delnor Poss High Country Shootout in Ruidoso, New Mexico, from Sept. 23 to 24. The women will compete at the Jacksonville Invitational on the same dates.
