Coyotes prevail in tough conditions at Shadow Valley
Men's golf finishes tournament as top two-year college
The Weatherford College men's golf team finished in a tie for seventh place out of 17 teams at the Shadow Valley Invitational in Rogers, Arkansas, on Monday and Tuesday.
WC, ranked No. 10 in the nation among National Junior College Athletic Association schools, was the highest finisher among two-year colleges at Shadow Valley. Harding University won the tournament at 24 over par.
Conditions were tough with heavy rains at Shadow Valley Country Club. After a 19-hour delay on Tuesday, teams resumed action in the second round, which had been cut short by darkness on Monday night. Teams were only able to complete two rounds as the final 18 holes were canceled because of inclement weather.
"This was another challenging week to play on a difficult course with extreme conditions," said Dave Rennhack, head WC golf coach. "They fought hard and finished ahead of the No. 2 team in NJCAA Division I. Our prior events in cold and wet conditions in New Orleans prepared them well."
The Coyotes had a 16-stroke improvement from round one to round two. WC turned in 13 birdies and an eagle in the second round, compared to seven birdies in the first 18 holes.
Abdo Fakori (78-75) had WC's top score, finishing in a tie for 20th place out of 90 individuals. Braylon Mahanay tied for 30th (83-73).
Next, WC will travel to San Angelo's Quicksand Golf Course for the TankLogix & Tall City Exploration Collegiate March 17-18.
