Coyotes outperform national leaders at Region 5 Championship
No. 9 WC takes third in challenging conditions
Playing in adverse conditions at Quicksand Golf Club in San Angelo, the Weatherford College men's golf team took third place at the NJCAA Region 5 Championship April 14-15.
The Coyotes, ranked No. 9 in the nation, defeated multiple top 10 teams, including No. 2 Odessa (fourth place), No. 7 McLennan (seventh) and the tournament's host, No. 8 Western Texas (fifth).
"The conditions were tough with the wind switching directions three times throughout the event," said Dave Rennhack, WC head golf coach. "The attitudes of our players and willingness to accept whatever challenges they encountered throughout their rounds with a positive mindset are making a big difference."
WC shot 288-298-294, finishing 16-over par. Midland won the tournament at 2-over par.
Weatherford's Abderahmane Fakori tied for sixth place out of 62 golfers at 3-over par (73-72-74). He finished the tournament strong with three birdies in his final 10 holes.
WC's Braylon Mahanay, Dawson Langan and Nathan Anderson finished tied for 15th place at 6-over.
The Coyotes will compete for a berth in the national tournament at the NJCAA South Central District Championship April 28-29 at The Hideout Golf Club and Resort in Brownwood.
"Our players have managed their emotions and matured throughout the season, and I'm looking forward to watching them compete in the postseason," Rennhack said.
