Coyotes capture NCTC Spring Invitational Title
Second consecutive week for WC to win big at golf tournament
For the second week in a row, the Weatherford College men's golf team hoists a first-place tournament trophy, with three athletes finishing in the top five.
WC rallied from behind to win the North Central Texas College Spring Invitational at Oakmont Country Club, defeating a field that featured No. 2 Odessa College, No. 3 McLennan and No. 4 Midland.
The Coyotes posted a 1-under-par team score (286-289—575) during Monday and Tuesday's rounds, coming out on top against the other 12 teams that competed. Weatherford College is now ranked No. 5 in the NJCAA Division I.
WC's Tanaka Chatora led the team, finishing as the runner-up in the individual standings at 2-under par (69-73). Two more Coyotes finished in the top five: Michael Mayer and Abderahmane Fakori tied for fifth place, both finishing at even par (144) for the tournament.
"We are off to a great start this spring," head coach Dave Renhack said. "In tough and windy conditions, we rallied from behind for the win over several ranked teams. I'm really proud of the way we handled ourselves today while facing extremely windy and difficult course conditions."
Depth was the deciding factor for the Coyotes, as all six participating athletes finished in the top 25. Nicholas Lewis took 11th place at 3-over par, while Dawson Langan tied for 12th (+4). Youssef El Hali rounded out the group in a tie for 21st (+6), closing the tournament with an impressive even-par 72 in the final round.
"This group is full of driven individuals with a desire to be the best," Renhack continued. "Watching them support one another and bond as a team is driving their early success this semester. Their hard work is paying off, and with each passing week, they continue to prove that they have the ability to compete for a national championship."
Weatherford was the only team in the field to finish under par. Midland College (No. 4) took second place at 7-over par, while Tyler Junior College and McLennan Community College (No. 3) finished in a tie for third at 13-over par.
