WC men’s tennis starts national tournament strong
In its first national tournament in the program’s inaugural year, the Weatherford College men’s team started great on Monday in Plano.
In its first national tournament in the program's inaugural year, the Weatherford College men's team started great on Monday in Plano. WC won five of its six singles matches and two of its three doubles matches to finish the first day tied for fifth place out of 25 teams.
In Flight 1 singles, WC's Bruno Britez defeated Edan Benitez 6-1, 6-1. In Flight 2, Alexis Leguizamon overcame a first set defeat to upset 6-seed Petar Wemmenhove of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (Georgia) 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
Emmanuel Jebutu quickly defeated Evan Bernales of College of Lake County (Illinois) 6-1, 6-0. Hugo Castets was also a big winner, 6-0, 6-2 over Ethan Krafft of Illinois Valley Community College. Marko Filipovic beat Taylor Miyatani of Mesa Community College (Arizona) 6-0, 6-1. The only WC singles loss was a close 6-4, 6-4 defeat for Christian Lopez against Alex Holder of Jones College (Mississippi).
In doubles, Lopez and Filipovic advanced with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory over Blakeney Allen and Isaac James of Meridian Community College (Mississippi). Britez and Leguizamon beat Jace Moody and Jose Munoz of Wallace State Community College (Alabama) 6-4, 6-3. The doubles team of Jebutu and Castes had to retire due to injury.
The tournament runs through Friday at Collin College and High Point Tennis Center.
