Coyotes dominate Chaps in conference opener
Dramatic walk-off home run clinches series for WC
Wednesday afternoon was the perfect day for softball. In their first two conference games of the season, the Weatherford College softball team got a doubleheader sweep of Vernon College at home at Stuart Field.
In their opening matchup, WC beat VC 10-4, racking up two runs in the first, three in the fifth and five in the sixth.
Lilli Williams had five RBI on two hits, and Madison Lux had two RBI on two hits and one run. Peyton Young had clean ones across the board (one walk, one run, one hit and one RBI).
Right-handed pitcher Sarah Hanf held her own through all seven innings played. She had eight strikeouts and zero walks.
The second game was a doozy. Like before, WC ran in two in the first. Vernon managed to earn a run in the fourth.
In response, the Coyotes brought two runs home, but the Chaps saw their two and put up three to tie the game in the fifth inning. Now the heat was on.
WC took that energy and brought in another run in the sixth to take the lead; however, Vernon took it right back in the seventh. At 5-4, the Coyotes' backs were against the wall. Enter Madison Lux.
With the game on the line and a runner in scoring position, Lux hit a line drive deep out to right for a walk-off home run, giving Weatherford the 7-5 win.
Right-handed pitchers Lindsey Oliver and Sarah Hanf had a combined five total strikeouts in this game (2 Oliver, 3 Hanf).
Five WC players had an RBI; Jillian Franco, Sadie Reid, Zaniah Coleman, Lilli Williams, and Madison Lux ended the game with 3 RBI.
The Coyotes will complete the second half of this series at Vernon College on Saturday, March 1, with the first game beginning at noon and the second game to follow at 2 p.m.
