Softball pitcher throws WC’s first perfect game
Program milestone adds to Coyotes win streak
By Joseph DuFrain
The No. 18 Weatherford College softball team had milestones against Hill College on Wednesday at Stuart Field. Not only did they surpass 30 overall wins this season, but freshman pitcher Sarah Hanf threw the first perfect game in program history.
Game one was a shutout victory for WC, dominating Hill with a score in every inning to win 11-0, with game two ending in a 9-4 triumph for the Coyotes.
Hanf pitched all five innings of the first game, striking out 11 batters with no walks, no runs, and no hits for a perfect game.
An RBI single from Peyton Young, followed up by a home run laser to left field by Jillian Franco, put the Coyotes on the board with 4-0 at the bottom of the first.
Two more runs came in off the bats of Sadie Reid and Lilli Williams in the second and third innings.
By the bottom of the fourth inning, the Coyotes delivered the final blow with five runs on six hits off the bats of Reid, Young, Franco and Karlie Landrum.
Game two was a fight. After the Coyotes scored early in the first inning with two and one more in the second, Hill College responded with a four-run third inning.
The tides changed, however, when Kaela Gillis hit an RBI single to tie the game back up in the bottom of the third. A bunt from Alexah Reyes brought another runner in on an error by the Rebels.
Reid and Williams hit the copy and paste on the RBI single from Gillis to make the score 7-4 in favor of the home team.
The final one-two punch came from Zaniah Coleman and Madison Lux, who each hit a solo home run and claimed the 9-4 victory for WC.
Oliver started for the Coyotes, pitching for three innings. She claimed seven strikeouts and allowed four runs on four hits.
Drissel struck out nine batters and only allowed two walks and two hits.
The Coyotes (31-9 overall, 19-7 conference) will finish their series at Hill College on Saturday, April 12, with the doubleheader starting at noon. WC will return home on Friday, April 18, to face No. 4 McLennan Community College.
