No. 1 Highlanders win two at WC
Coyotes look to post-season after end of conference play
The No. 17 Weatherford College softball team dropped its doubleheader with the visiting No. 1 McLennan Highlanders on Friday, falling 7-2 in game one and 17-3 in game two.
The Coyotes now have a record of 21-11 in conference play, stand at 33-13 overall and are third in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference.
The early game started with both teams competing well. McLennan was the first to score, managing an RBI in the second inning on an automatic double.
The Coyotes got things rolling in the third. Peyton Young and Sadie Reid each hit a single to put runners in scoring position.
Karlie Landrum brought in Young for an RBI single to tie it at one's across the board.
Despite impressive defense from the Coyotes and great pitching from right-hander Faith Drissel, the Highlanders managed a five-run inning in the fifth to ultimately take the lead and the game.
The Coyotes managed to score on an RBI double from Reid and an RBI single from Janae Trojacek in the first inning of game two; however, the Highlanders played lights out for the remainder of the game.
Putting up four in the second and a combined 12 in the fourth and fifth, the visiting team won on the run rule.
The Coyotes have a bye in the final week of conference play. The location and opponents in the regional tournament will be determined by the end of the regular season April 26.
