Lady Coyotes win play-in game, advance to regionals
Anisiobi's double-double secures postseason spot
For the first time in three years, the Weatherford College women's basketball team is heading to the postseason.
WC defeated Temple College 78-64 on Monday in a "play-in" game to break a tie for fourth place in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference standings. The game was played at Hill College in Hillsboro.
With the win, WC earned the fourth seed in the Region V Tournament. The Lady Coyotes will face New Mexico Junior College, ranked No. 3 in the nation and champions of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference, in the first round. Tipoff on Thursday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Lady Coyotes outscored the Lady Leopards 23-14 in the second quarter to take a 38-30 halftime lead and never looked back.
Weatherford's Neso Anisiobi had a big night with 21 points and 16 rebounds. She was one of three Lady Coyotes who finished in double figures in the rebound category (Pearson McVay and Klimentina Modeva had 10 each).
Esther Daniels scored 18 points and Jacque Giron added 12.
WC has won three games in a row and four of their last six.
With a 20-10 overall record, the Lady Coyotes reached 20 wins for the first time since the 2019-20 season, when they finished 22-9 overall.
