Bio

Through the 2024-25 season, Bob McKinley owns a 1,027-544 record in his 48 years coaching at Weatherford College. He is the winningest NJCAA Division I basketball coach in the nation. 

The Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference has named him Coach of the Year 12 times. In 2015, he was inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women’s Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. In 2025, the NJCAA named him in the inaugural class of NJCAA Coaches Legacy Award winners.

McKinley came to WC in 1977. He has coached the women’s team for 30 years and coached the men’s team for 18 years, including six seasons as the head coach of both squads simultaneously. He also served as WC’s athletic director for 41 years until he decided to coach women’s basketball exclusively in 2025. 

In his time as head women’s basketball coach, the Lady Coyotes have earned 16 conference championships, five regional championships, five national tournament berths and one NJCAA Final Four appearance. So far, 20 NJCAA All-America selections and many Academic All-America honorees have played for the WC coach.

As a player, McKinley led Bowie High School to the state finals in 1959 and the regional tournament in 1958 and 1960, earning a spot in the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame. He went on to play at TCU, where he was named team captain of the Horned Frogs. 

He began his coaching career at Pasadena High School, eventually moving on to Houston Baptist University, and then to WC. 

Bob’s wife of 57 years, Dee, passed away in 2020.  Their son, Trey, is WC's Kinesiology Department chair.  Their daughter, Traci, passed away in 2024.  He has five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
