WC women's golf wins in Waco, men finish third
Coyotes take home the gold and bronze in Waco tournament
The Weatherford College men's and women's golf teams competed in the Waco River Classic Monday and Tuesday, with the women's team taking first place and the men taking third.
"Our women's team stepped it up a notch and got the win, said WC head coach Dave Rennhack. "The extra work is really paying off."
Sophomore Emily Gutierez finished fourth overall individually for the Coyotes. Freshman Yixuan Mu finished seventh and sophomore Corrina Haros placed eighth.
Assistant coach Katie Johnston said she was impressed with the goals her team had for this tournament.
"I'm proud of how they carried themselves and how they played," Johnston said. "They fought to the very end. I can't wait to see what they do for the upcoming tournaments."
The men's team put in the work and came out with a solid victory, playing well in the final round. Finishing third, WC was just three shots behind McLennan Community College and one shot behind No. 1 ranked Midland College.
WC's newest recruit, Michael Mayer, finished individually in second place along with fellow freshman Nicholas Lewis finishing in 10th place.
It was the first time in program history WC led after the first 36 holes of competition against the best teams in the nation.
"Our men's team had a strong showing," continued Rennhack. "The field included six out of the top ten teams in the nation."
Both teams will be on the road next week in Ruidoso, New Mexico for the Poss High Country Shoot Out.
