WC women’s tennis finishes 9th at nationals
Highest finish since 2022 at NJCAA Tournament
The Weatherford College women's tennis team finished ninth at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Tyler on Wednesday. It is WC's highest finish since advancing to eighth place in 2022.
"We had some opportunities to win even more matches, but things didn't swing our way," said Steph Wooten, WC head tennis coach. "We got a little nervous and lost some matches against players we had beaten earlier in the season."
WC's top two doubles teams each advanced to the quarterfinals: Hoziane Kitambala/Claire Mahere (Flight 1) and Juliana Jurado/Rosmary Pena (Flight 2).
On the final day of competition, Wednesday, Kitambala won the Flight 2 singles consolation final, and Pena won the Flight 3 consolation final.
Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida, won the national championship, their second title in three years. Cowley College (Kansas) was second and Tyler Junior College, the host team, was third.
"I think the season went well overall," said Wooten, who is in her first year at WC. "We started the fall with just two girls and then took six to compete at the highest level at nationals. We have good momentum going into next year."
The WC men's tennis team will compete in their national tournament May 12-16 in Florence, South Carolina.
