WC tennis succeeds at ITA Regionals
Impressive performance by doubles team earns invitation for future match
The Weatherford College tennis teams had success at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Plano Oct. 2-4, including a coveted invitation earned by a women's doubles team.
WC's Juliana Jurado and Maria Camila Ternera made the event's doubles finals after defeating a team from Collin College 8-5 in the quarterfinals and a Tyler Junior College team in the semifinals, 8-3. Dina Lipovski and Sherin Scheerle from TJC won the final, 6-4, 7-5.
Due to their performance in Plano, Jurado and Ternera qualified for the ITA Cup, the nation's premier individual championship in the fall. The ITA Cup will take place in Rome, Georgia Oct. 16-19.
In men's singles, Coyote freshman Matteo Cardoso reached the semifinals of the main draw in Plano. Cardoso defeated Collin College's David De Hoyos Rodriguez 6-3, 6-3, then won against Tyler's Ties De Regt 6-3, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, he took out Toby Eyrl-Collins of Tyler 6-2, 6-1.
In the semifinals, Cardoso met up with TJC's Daniel Marcinas, who went on to win the tournament. Cardoso gave Marcinas his closest match, 7-6, 2-6, 13-11.
Other WC wins included:
• Women's singles: Sara Tublen defeated Ximena Islas of Jacksonville College, 7-5, 6-4. Kameron Shipp beat Imara Achala of Jacksonville, 6-1, 6-0. After a first round bye, Ternera defeated Emma Garcia Gomez of Collin 6-4, 6-2.
• Men's singles: Andres Serrano beat Alejandro Idarraga of Jacksonville, 6-1, 6-4. Guy Morian beat Connor Hubbert of Jacksonville in the opening round of singles play, 6-1, 6-0. Santiago Hidalgo won against Niko Nadali of Collin, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. Benjamin Asker Ongaro defeated Vicente Rojas of Jacksonville, 6-0, 6-2.
• Women's doubles: Rosmary Pena and Valeria Cabrera took out a team from Jacksonville, 8-0.
• Men's doubles: Hidalgo and Cardoso won their opening round doubles match against a team from Jacksonville, 8-6. Asker Ongaro and Juan Rozo defeated a Collin team in the first round.
