WC wins four out of five singles matches on opening day of nationals
The No. 10 Weatherford College women's tennis team opened play at the NJCAA Division I National Championship on Saturday in Sumter, South Carolina.
After weather delays pushed play into the evening, the Coyotes won four of five singles matches on the first day of competition.
In Flight 2 singles, Valeria Cabrera defeated Ebonie Russell of Pratt (Kansas) 6-1, 7-5. Rosmary Pena earned a straight-sets victory in Flight 4, beating Pawarapa Thaimuangphal of USC Sumter 6-2, 6-0.
Kshirin Wakalkar picked up a win in Flight 5 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Olivia Cox of Southwestern Illinois, and Amanda Skeltina cruised past Lauren Barker of Barton (Kansas) 6-0, 6-0 in Flight 6.
Weatherford's lone singles loss Saturday came in Flight 1, where Maria Camila Ternera fell to Barton's Vitoria Campigotto in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
Sunday proved more challenging for the Coyotes. Cabrera fell to Cynthia Wanjala in Flight 2, 6-2, 6-1, while Jurado was defeated by Barton's Grace Tchamoussa 7-5, 6-3 in Flight 3. In Flight 4, Hillsborough (Florida) freshman Noah Rojas topped Pena 6-2, 6-0.
Wakalkar dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Aisulu Zholbolat in Flight 5, and Skeltina was defeated by Emily Lederer in Flight 6.
In doubles play Sunday, Weatherford's Flight 1 team of Ternera and Wakalkar lost to Collin's Marqaylar Tere and Marie Urcun. The Coyotes' Flight 2 pairing of Cabrera and Tublen was defeated by Stefani Georgieva and Olivia Goldsack of St. Petersburg (Florida) 6-3, 7-6.
The tournament continues through Wednesday at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
