WC volleyball opens regionals with sweep
The Weatherford College Coyotes volleyball team opened the Region V Tournament with a decisive sweep against Frank Phillips College, extending their winning streak to 17 matches.
Weatherford College started the Region V Volleyball Tournament with a first-round sweep of Frank Phillips College on Thursday in Roswell, New Mexico.
The No. 5 Coyotes have won 17 matches in a row, and it was their 18th sweep of the season.
Despite being swept, Frank Phillips did not go down without a fight. WC won the first set 25-22 and the second 25-11, but FPC pushed WC to a 27-25 final set score.
Weronika Urbanksa, the Player of the Year Award winner in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference, had 12 kills and seven digs.
Abby Hellman added 11 kills and Gabriella Maldonado turned in 9 kills and four digs.
Lorena Gomez had 22 assists and Victoria Sanchez had 10.
Kiana Souza logged 13 digs and Abby Morris had 10.
The Coyotes were scheduled to face No. 9 Odessa College in a second-round game Friday at 11 a.m. The winner will play for the Region V championship and an automatic berth in the national tournament on Saturday at 1 p.m. The tournament is hosted by New Mexico Military Institute.
