WC beats No. 9 Odessa to advance to finals
The Coyotes extended their winning streak to 18 with a hard-fought sweep of Odessa College in the Region V Tournament, overcoming multiple set points in the first and third sets.
The Weatherford College volleyball team swept Odessa College in the second round of the Region V Tournament Friday in Roswell, New Mexico, but it certainly wasn't easy.
In the first set, Odessa had set point five times but the Coyotes stormed back at every turn. An Evelyn Benson service ace made it 31-30 and the Coyotes finished it off, winning 32-30.
The second set was a dominant 25-12 WC win, but the third set looked like it might go Odessa's way. The Wranglers had a 23-19 lead but WC stormed back, winning 26-24 and advancing in the tournament.
WC is ranked No. 5 in the nation, Odessa is No. 9.
The win was WC's 18th in a row and their 19th sweep of the season.
Weronika Urbanska led the offense with 12 kills and Abby Hellman had 11. Lorena Gomez had 22 assists and Victoria Sanchez had 10.
Defensively, Kiana Souza logged 13 digs and Abby Morris added 10.
The Coyotes (29-5) will face No. 3 New Mexico Military Institute (30-2) on Saturday at 1 p.m. Mountain Time (2 p.m. Central) at NMMI. The winner will be region champion with an automatic berth in the national tournament. The loser will play for runner-up status and a nationals berth at 4:30 MST (5:30 CST) on Saturday afternoon.
