WC sweeps TVCC in national tourney
Coyotes are assured of a top 10 finish for the second year in a row.
The Weatherford College volleyball team swept Trinity Valley Community College Friday, 25-21, 25-23, 25-17 in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Clarksville, Tennessee.
With their second straight victory in this tournament, the Coyotes (31-8) are assured of a top 10 finish for the second year in a row. WC will play at 9 a.m. Saturday in Austin Peay State University's Dunn Center in the ninth place match.
"We're excited," said Kailee May, WC head coach. "We've already outperformed last year as far as matches won, which was a big goal for us, so this is a big win."
Like in Thursday's match against Eastern Wyoming, the second set was the most demanding.
There were 10 ties in the second set. The key moment came after May called for a video challenge with the score tied 22-22. The challenge was successful, and the Coyotes didn't trail again, finishing off the set.
WC was aggressive in the third set, winning with a .433 hitting percentage.
Weronika Urbanska, the Player of the Year in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference, had her best match of the tournament with 16 kills and six digs.
"I feel like the atmosphere was so much better," Urbanska said. "We're a family and we played together, communicating to play better."
The Coyotes' offense was balanced again, with Abby Hellman contributing 11 kills, Gabriela Maldonado with nine and Abby Morris with seven.
Lorena Gomez turned in 25 assists. Morris led the team in digs with 14 and Kiana Souza had 13.
It was the Coyotes' 21st sweep of the season and their second in the national tournament.
