The Weatherford College baseball team reached the final round of the super regional tournament but came up short, as Midland College will represent Region V in the upcoming NJCAA Division I World Series.
After five previous losses to No. 10 McLennan Community College this season, the No. 21 Coyotes got their revenge when it mattered most, eliminating MCC with a 10-8 win Saturday at Roger Williams Ballpark. That meant only two teams were left: Weatherford and Midland. The No. 9 Chaparrals took the second game of the day, 13-1, and are headed to Grand Junction, Colorado.
WC finished the season with a 41-20 overall record. This is the Coyotes' second consecutive year to reach the super regional finals.
Weatherford jumped out early against McLennan, plating two runs in each of the first, third, fifth and seventh innings to build a multi-run cushion throughout. The Coyotes finished with 10 runs on 10 hits and took advantage of four home runs, two from Jake Overstreet, to power the offense.
McLennan mounted a late push, scoring two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and three more in the seventh to tie the game 8-8 in the seventh. However, Weatherford answered with two runs in the top of the ninth to hold off the comeback bid and secure the 10-8 victory. McLennan drew 14 walks and got two RBI from Tyler Ness and Brennon Seigler, but the Highlanders stranded 25 runners.
Overstreet finished with five RBI. Jackson Irons was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
In the Midland game, Weatherford struck first but could not contain the Chaps' offense.
WC's Jake Overstreet delivered an RBI single in the first inning to give Weatherford an early lead.
Midland broke the game open in the third with five runs, highlighted by AJ Velarde's three-run double that made it 6-1. Velarde added a three-run homer in the fifth as part of a six-RBI performance, leading MC's 13-hit attack.
Overstreet finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and two walks to pace the Coyotes, while Austin Godwin, Irons and Kyzer Harrington each added a hit. Weatherford showed patience at the plate with eight walks and played error-free defense.
Midland starter Luke Hayhow earned the win, allowing one run on three hits over 5 2/3 innings while striking out eight.
