WC volleyball wins regional championship, advances to nationals
The Coyotes locked down their third consecutive trip to the NJCAA National Tournament after sweeping No. 7 Odessa College in the Region V Championship match on Saturday, extending their win streak to 20.
The NJCAA volleyball polls have ranked Weatherford College as the top team in Region V all season, and the Coyotes proved it on the court this weekend.
No. 2 Weatherford swept No. 7 Odessa College in the Region V Tournament championship match on Saturday in the Betty Jo Graber Athletic Center, securing its 20th consecutive victory.
Weatherford (32-2) now advances to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Clarksville, Tennessee, Nov. 19–22. This marks the Coyotes' third consecutive appearance at nationals.
Odessa (29-4) came ready to play, as the two teams traded leads three times in the opening set. WC didn't take its first advantage until head coach Kailee May won a video challenge, giving the Coyotes an 8-7 edge.
After building a seven-point lead, Weatherford saw Odessa close the gap to 24-22 before finishing off the first set, 25-22.
The Coyotes never trailed again, dominating the second set, 25-13, and pulling away late in the third to clinch the match, 25-20.
Freshman Mirabel Onyegwu led WC with 10 kills and five digs. Glorybell Puente Estrella and Weronika Urbanska added nine kills each.
Victoria Sanchez recorded 25 assists and 10 digs, while Kiana Souza and Beline Thibaut contributed 11 digs apiece.
The NJCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament Selection Show is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 12, (time TBA) on the NJCAA Network. The broadcast will determine seeding, first-round opponents and match times.
